Football Legend Kevin Keegan Continues Cancer Treatment After Shock Diagnosis
Football icon Kevin Keegan, former manager of Newcastle United and England, is undergoing cancer treatment following his diagnosis earlier this year, his family confirmed in a statement.
Keegan, 74, was admitted to hospital in January 2026 due to persistent abdominal symptoms. After a series of medical tests, doctors confirmed the diagnosis of cancer, and Keegan has since begun treatment.
A statement from his family at the time of the diagnosis read:
“Kevin Keegan was admitted to hospital for further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms. These investigations revealed a diagnosis of cancer, for which Kevin is now receiving treatment. Kevin is grateful to the medical team for their intervention and ongoing care. During this difficult time, the family requests privacy and will be making no further comment.”
Following the announcement, an outpouring of support has flooded in from the football community.
Newcastle United, where Keegan is celebrated as a club legend, shared the family’s statement and posted a heartfelt message on social media:
“King Kev. We’re with you every step of the way. Hoping for a full and speedy recovery.”
Liverpool, another of Keegan’s former clubs, also expressed their support. The club, along with its former players’ association Forever Reds, sent their best wishes to Keegan and his family during this challenging time.
Keegan remains one of the most celebrated figures in English football. He enjoyed a storied playing career, winning major trophies with Liverpool, earning 63 caps for England, and later becoming a prominent manager for Newcastle United, England, and Manchester City.
Despite the shock of the diagnosis, reports suggest that Keegan’s recovery is progressing well, though his family has requested privacy during this time.
